The maintenance of the Savage Model 10-II
Provided By Doug
The maintenance of
the Savage Model 10-II is not much more than a modern center fire rifle. If
you only shoot smokeless powder the cleaning of the gun is like a center fire
using smokeless powder. Every once in a while you will need to use a bore
brush and solvent to remove the plastic build up from the use of sabots.
The cleaning of the breech plug is where it is a little different. You will
need to remove the carbon build up inside the breech plug which is generated
by the primers. This is best done with carburetor cleaner and a small caliber
brush (17 or 22 caliber). You can also use a cleaner called RB-17 gun cleaner
and a wire brush to scrub the carbon out of the breech plug. You will also
need to clean the threads on the breech plug and also the threads in the breech
end of the barrel. A bottle brush works well for this. Remove the vent liner
and check for wear. If the hole has burned to a larger size it needs replacing.
If target shooting at a range, you should remove the breech plug and re apply
anti-seize after every 35 to 40 shots. This is just added insurance against
the breech plug or vent liner seizing up.
Always apply a small amount of anti-seize to BOTH the threads of the vent
liner AND breech plug and reassemble. Oiling the exposed surfaces of the barrel
and action will keep the gun from rusting and a film of oil inside the bore
will prevent rust. Remember stainless steel which firearms are made of will
rust; it just takes a bit longer for the rust to start.
